“Stages of the Historical Development of Piano Art in Uzbekistan”
Sayyora Gafurova - Honored Artist of the Republic of Uzbekistan, professor, vice-rector for science and innovation of the State Conservatory of Uzbekistan, laureate of international competitions. She graduated with honours from the specialized music school named after V. Uspensky in the classes of the Honoured Teacher of Uzbekistan T. Popovich and Professor G. Kalmykova. As a schoolgirl, she became a laureate of the Republican competition among secondary school students. During her years of study at the Tashkent Conservatory (in the class of Professor A. Geckelman, in graduate school - in the class of Professor O. Yusupova), S. Gafurova took an active part and became a laureate of various international competitions and competitions in Bishkek (Kyrgyzstan), Leeds (England), Marsala (Italy), Cantu (Italy), Enne (Italy), Paris (France).
Having first appeared on stage at the age of ten, she has been a soloist at the piano for more than forty years and is one of the leading concert pianists in Uzbekistan. Her extensive repertoire includes over twenty works for piano and orchestra by such composers as J. S. Bach, J. Haydn, W. Mozart, L. Beethoven, F. Chopin, J. Brahms, P. Tchaikovsky, S. Rachmaninov.
Gafurova is the first performer in Uzbekistan of a number of masterpieces of the world piano repertoire, including Concerto No. 2 for keyboard and orchestra (E major) BWV 1053 and Concerto No. 4 for keyboard and orchestra (A major) BWV 1055 by J. S. Bach, Concerto Concerto for keyboard by F.E. Bach, Rondo in G major op.129 “Rage over a lost penny” by L. Beethoven (arranged by F. Yanov-Yanovsky for piano and orchestra), Andante spianato and great brilliant polonaise by F. Chopin (author’s version for piano and orchestra), Concerto for piano and orchestra No. 2 in G major op. 44 P. Tchaikovsky.
Possessing a large concert repertoire, S. Gafurova constantly performs both with solo and ensemble concerts, and with symphony and chamber orchestras in Uzbekistan, in the CIS countries (Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan) and abroad (England, France, Germany, Italy, South Korea, Turkey, China, Israel). She has repeatedly performed with many famous conductors of Uzbekistan - Z. Khaknazarov, K. Usmanov, G. Tulyaganov, A. Ergashev, E. Azimov, V. Medulyanov, E. Azimov, A. Raimdzhanov, K. Urinbaev, A. Shokhakimov, and also by conductors from Germany - Y. Bartholdi, Great Britain - G. Koneway, Belarus - A. Anisimov, Russia - D. Khokhlov, M. Golikov, V. Dulat-Aleev, Italy - G. Kolloyani, France - Nathalie Marin and others.
On June 9, 2022, in the Great Hall of the State Conservatory of Uzbekistan, accompanied by the State Symphony Orchestra under the direction of the Honoured Artist of the Republic of Uzbekistan, rector of the State Conservatory of Uzbekistan Kamoliddin Urinbaev, Sayyora Gafurova performed with the rector of the St. Petersburg Conservatory named after N. Rimsky-Korsakov, Honoured Artist of Russia A. Vasiliev and UNESCO Artist, Rector of the Kazakh National University of Arts, People's Artist of Kazakhstan A. Musakhodjaeva the Triple Concerto for piano, violin and cello with orchestra in C major, op. 56 L. Beethoven, in a concert dedicated to the 85th anniversary of the State Conservatory of Uzbekistan. On January 14, 2023, Sayyora Gafurova performed in the Great Hall of the Moscow Conservatory, performing the same concert with the Honoured Artist of Russia, Professor of the Moscow State Tchaikovsky Conservatory A. Trostyansky (violin) and with the Honoured Artist of Russia, Rector of the St. Petersburg Conservatory, Professor A. Vasiliev (cello) accompanied by the Moscow State Symphony Orchestra (conductor - M. Golikov). As the result of her creative communication with the rector of the Kazan Conservatory named after N. Zhiganov - V.Dulat-Aleev she performed the Concertos for two and three claviers by J.S.Bach (together with F. Mukhamedova and E. Pavlovsky) on the stage of the State Grand Concert Hall named after Salikh Saidashev in Kazan on March 21, 2024. On April 30, 2024, she was given a joint concert with the Honoured Artist of Russia, Professor of the Department of Special Piano, Piano Faculty of the Moscow State Conservatory. P.I. Tchaikovsky, Laureate of numerous international competitions, professor of piano at the New England Conservatory Pavel Nersesyan, where they, accompanied by the Student Chamber Orchestra of the State Conservatory of Uzbekistan (conductor - E. Azimov), performed the Concerto for 2 pianos and orchestra by J. S. Bach and the Concerto for 2 pianos with orchestra by W.A. Mozart.
Sayyora Gafurova is the author, organizer and performer of a number of unique projects. Among them, the evening “Six Keyboard Concertos of Bach” stands out, accompanied by the chamber orchestra “Turkiston” under the direction of the Honoured Artist of Uzbekistan Eldar Azimov, when it performed six keyboard concertos of the composer at once. Subsequently, a CD of J. S. Bach's piano concertos was recorded. Also, an important role in the cultural life of the country was played by her project “All Piano Concertos of Ludwig van Beethoven”, during which S. Gafurova performed five concertos for piano and orchestra, Fantasia for piano, choir and orchestra in C minor Op.80 and the “Triple” concert for violin, cello and piano in C major op.56. These compositions were performed in Uzbekistan for the first time within the framework of one cycle. The listed large-scale projects caused a great resonance among both specialists and fans of classical music. In addition, S. Gafurova initiated and organized the projects “Wreath for Chopin”, “Evolution of the Piano Concerto”, “Golden Musical Fall of Leaves” and others.
Gafurova is a jury member of many Republican and International piano competitions, among which the Youth International Competition named after. P. Tchaikovsky.
In parallel with her concert activities, S. Gafurova is actively engaged in scientific and methodological work. She has published three educational and methodic manuals, one textbook and more than thirty scientific and methodological articles. Moreover, she is distinguished by a subtle organizational sense; for several years she headed the department of “special piano” at the State Conservatory of Uzbekistan, and from 2017 to the present day she has been vice-rector for science and innovation at the State Conservatory of Uzbekistan. Over the years, S. Gafurova signed memorandums on creative cooperation with music universities in Beijing, Baku, St. Petersburg and Brussels. She is also a participant in numerous international festivals, conferences, anniversary evenings, and round tables in China, Russia, Belarus, Azerbaijan, and Tajikistan.
For her great contribution to the development of the musical art of the country, Sayyora Gafurova was awarded the “Shukhrat” medal and the title “Honored Artist of the Republic of Uzbekistan” by decree of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan.
Sayyora Gafurova is one of the significant figures in musical art of Uzbekistan, affirming its creative principles, strives for constant improvement of skills, making a worthy contribution to the development of Uzbek musical art.
